What is Amber?
Although amber is widely regarded as a gemstone, it is in fact something far more extraordinary. Amber is fossilised tree resin that has hardened and transformed over millions of years, making each piece a genuine relic of the ancient world. Unlike mineral gemstones formed deep within the earth, amber began its life as the sticky sap of prehistoric trees, slowly solidifying and preserving everything it encountered along the way.
When polished, amber has a wonderful depth and warmth to it, glowing with a rich golden light and feeling pleasantly warm to the touch. It is far lighter than traditional gemstones, making it exceptionally comfortable to wear, and its organic origins mean that no two pieces are ever exactly alike. Every piece of amber jewellery is as individual and unique as the person who wears it.
The History of Amber
Amber has one of the longest and most fascinating histories of any material used in jewellery. Evidence suggests that amber was being used for ornamental purposes as far back as 13,000 years ago, during the Stone Age. Amber beads and pendants have been discovered in archaeological sites across Europe, Asia and North America, testament to how widely this remarkable material was prized by ancient peoples.
In the ancient world, amber was considered almost magical. The ancient Greeks called it elektron — the origin of the word electricity — because of the static charge it produces when rubbed. Greek mythology held that amber was formed from the tears of the Heliades, the sisters of Phaethon, who wept into the river Eridanus after their brother's death. The Romans prized amber so highly that a small amber figurine could be worth more than a healthy slave.
During the medieval period, amber was used extensively in religious artefacts and rosary beads, and Baltic amber in particular became one of the most valuable traded commodities in Europe. The famous Amber Road — a network of ancient trade routes stretching from the Baltic coast to the Mediterranean — carried amber south for centuries, exchanged for silk, spices and precious metals.
In more recent times, amber captured the public imagination once again with the release of Jurassic Park, which brought widespread attention to the remarkable phenomenon of insects and plant matter preserved inside amber for tens of millions of years. Amber with inclusions — insects, leaves, air bubbles or other organic matter trapped within — remains among the most sought-after and collectible pieces in the world.
Types of Amber
Amber is found in many parts of the world, but Baltic amber — sourced from the shores of the Baltic Sea, particularly in Poland, Lithuania and Latvia — is the most prized and widely used in fine jewellery. Our collection is crafted exclusively with genuine Baltic amber.
The Benefits of Amber
Beyond its beauty, amber has long been associated with a range of therapeutic and wellbeing benefits. It contains succinic acid, a naturally occurring compound with anti-inflammatory properties, which has led to amber being used for centuries as a folk remedy for pain relief — particularly for conditions such as arthritis, headaches and teething in young children.
Amber is also believed to have a calming effect on the nervous system, helping to reduce stress and anxiety and promoting relaxation and restful sleep. Many people find that wearing amber jewellery gives them a sense of warmth and comfort, which may be connected to its ancient associations with the sun and natural energy.
Whether you are drawn to amber for its beauty, its history or its reputed wellbeing properties, it is a gemstone — or rather, a natural wonder — that rewards closer acquaintance.

Caring for Your Amber Jewellery
Amber is a relatively soft and lightweight material, so a little care goes a long way in keeping it looking its best:
- Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth — avoid harsh chemicals, detergents and ultrasonic cleaners
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can cause amber to darken or become brittle over time
- Keep away from perfumes, hairsprays and lotions, which can dull the surface
- Remove before showering, swimming or exercising
- Store separately from harder gemstones to prevent scratching
With proper care, your amber jewellery will retain its warmth, depth and beauty for a lifetime.
