About Onyx

Onyx is a form of quartz, composed of fine intergrowths of silica minerals, and has been used to create beautiful jewellery since ancient times. Its deep, lustrous black has made it one of the most enduring gemstones in history.

In Ancient Egypt, onyx was carved into amulets and used as a form of protection against evil. The Romans associated it with courage and strength, using it to carve intricate cameos worn by warriors and statesmen. By the Victorian era, onyx had become the stone of choice for mourning jewellery — Queen Victoria herself commissioned many onyx pieces following the death of Prince Albert in 1861.

In the 1920s and 1930s, onyx was embraced by the Art Deco movement, with Cartier incorporating it into some of their most iconic high-end pieces. Its geometric quality made it perfectly suited to the bold, architectural designs of the era — and it remains just as striking today.

About Jet

Jet is a remarkable gemstone with a rich and fascinating origin. Formed over millions of years from fossilised wood compressed under extreme pressure, it has a distinctive black, velvety appearance and is exceptionally lightweight — a quality that made it ideal for the larger, more elaborate pieces of the Art Deco period.

The most celebrated jet in the world comes from Whitby in North Yorkshire, where it has been mined and crafted into jewellery for centuries. Whitby jet reached the height of its popularity during the Victorian era, again closely associated with mourning jewellery and worn widely following the death of Prince Albert.

Today, jet continues to be used in necklaces, pendants, bracelets and earrings, prized for its warm, lightweight feel and its deep, lustrous black finish.

The Meaning & Benefits of Onyx & Jet

Both onyx and jet carry strong symbolic associations that have endured across cultures and centuries — though as with all gemstone beliefs, these are traditional rather than scientifically proven:

  • Protection — both stones have long been associated with shielding the wearer from negative energy and harm
  • Strength & willpower — onyx in particular is said to promote inner strength, determination and self-discipline
  • Grounding & stability — both stones are thought to bring a sense of calm, focus and emotional balance
  • Absorbing negativity — onyx is traditionally believed to absorb and transform negative energy
  • Courage — historically worn by Roman warriors, onyx has long been a symbol of bravery and resilience

Caring for Your Onyx & Jet Jewellery

  • Remove before showering, swimming or using household chemicals
  • Clean onyx gently with a soft damp cloth and dry thoroughly — avoid ultrasonic cleaners
  • Clean jet with a dry or very slightly damp soft cloth only — jet is porous and should not be soaked in water
  • Store separately from harder gemstones to avoid surface scratches
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can cause jet to dry out over time

With the right care, both onyx and jet jewellery will retain their beautiful depth of colour for many years to come.
