Peridot is a vibrant green gemstone with a rich history and interesting properties. So what is it that makes this gem so special ?
Origins
Peridot brought to the surface from the earths mantle by volcanic activity, is found in rocks with the lava.Interestingly, peridot has also been found in meteorites called pallasites, making it one of the few gemstones originating from outside Earth's crust.
Originally found and mined in abundance in St Johns Isalnd the Egption Red Sea.
Other sources today include Afirca Arizonia China Myanmar and Parlistan.
History and Lore
Peridot has a long and fascinating history, prized by ancient civilizations.
The ancient Egyptians called it the "gem of the sun" and believed it had protective powers against evil spirits and nightmares. Some historians even speculate that Cleopatra's famous "emerald" collection might have actually been peridot.
It was used in jewelry by Egyptian pharaohs and later by Roman and medieval cultures. Peridot was brought to Europe by Crusaders and used to adorn religious objects.
Peridot is the birthstone for August and is also the traditional gem given for the 16th wedding anniversary.
In folklore, peridot has been associated with energy, happiness, good health, peace, and protection.
Value and Uses
The value of peridot depends on its color, clarity, size, and cut. A pure, vivid green color is the most desirable.
It is used in various types of jewellery, including rings, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. Peridot is generally not treated to enhance its color or clarity.
In summary, peridot is a unique and beautiful gemstone with a distinctive olive-green hue, a long and storied past, and fascinating origins both on Earth and even from space. Its vibrant color and historical significance make it a cherished gem.
What is Peridot?
Peridot is a transparent, yellow-green variety of the mineral olivine.
It is one of the few gemstones that naturally occurs in only one color: green. However, the intensity and tint of the green can vary from yellow-green to olive green and even brownish-green, depending on the amount of iron in its crystal structure. The most desirable color is a rich, pure grass green without yellow or brown undertones.
