It is an ancient gemstone, formed millions of years ago, from the fossilised wood of the Araucaria, (a large Monkey puzzle tree).
Jet mining was thought to have taken place in this area in the Bronze Age, but he peak years were in Victorian times, when it is worn as mourning jewellery.
At that time the manufacturing shops in the town employed some 1500 men in the industry.
Today there are only a handful of workshops left, as the work is very time consuming, and each piece is individually made.
